MedSpa Registered Nurse
Ms. Malchesky finished her BSN at Cincinnati University and started her nursing career in Pediatric Oncology. She now works as a registered nurse (RN) at a MedSpa/Health and Wellness Center, providing holistic care to patients.
Interview:
How did you balance your academic responsibilities and any part-time nursing jobs you might have had during college?
Malchesky worked as a Patient Care Assistant through Cincinnati Children’s, which was close to where she lived during college. She worked one night shift a week and usually chose the weekend. She then would schedule her classes so she has a couple of days of full classes, one day of clinical, and an extra day for school work. She found it very useful to purchase a decent planner to make sure she was meeting deadlines and keeping up with time management.
What motivated you to choose a satellite campus for your education, and how do you feel it benefited you the most?
A satellite campus was not an original thought for Ms. Malchesky because she had been accepted into the Univesity of Cincinnati’s four-year BSN program. However, her first year of college was a difficult adjustment, and wanted to complete school as quickly as she could. She learned that some of her friends were applying for Cincinnati’s Blue Ash nursing program. This led to her discovery that she could finish college in just 2-years. She ended up in that very program after applying and graduated with her RN degree a year earlier than the main campus. After, she obtained her BSN online while working as a nurse. She ended up loving her college experience and created a balance that was fit for her. In addition to a quicker degree, the satellite campus was also a cheaper option. Many doors opened once she was in college and could experiment with her degree further.
How does your diverse nursing background prepare you for the specific demands and responsibilities of working in a MedSpa?
Malchesky describes how different working in a MedSpa compared to a hospital is. She shared that a MedSpa is much more relaxed and less stress-inducing. Although, it is very important for her, and all employees there, to have plenty of knowledge because there are no doctors in the center. In many instances, she has had to use her prior knowledge such as patients being sensitive to needles, blood, and even the saunas. She concludes with how her background has taught her patient care and how to educate patients.
What aspects of working at a MedSpa do you find the most rewarding compared to your previous nursing roles?
She begins by mentioning that working in a MedSpa is always rewarding because the patients want to be there. They tend to be appreciative of all services offered. She found that her favorite aspect of the job is the relationships she gets to form with her coworkers and the guests. What keeps her positive is other patients’ good news and enthusiasm. She admits that she loves to spend time with her coworkers, even some guests, outside of payroll. After her move to Florida, her decision to work at MedSpa has helped in making her feel more at home.
Can you share the most memorable experience or lesson from your nursing education that has had a lasting impact on your career?
A memorable experience that has had a lasting impact on Ms. Malchesky is her time as a nurse at Cincinnati Children’s. She worked in the Oncology unit and was able to see some beautiful things. However, being in a hospital will attract an immense amount of heartbreak. She loved watching kids on their good days. The kids had been friends with the nurses and with each other. The support system between nurses and patients is crucial to the job and she perfected that by playing with the kids and watching movies at night. She shared how amazing it feels to see how kind and brave the patients were. Even when children were sick in the hospital, and the parents would bring food, they would also make sure to bring food for their nurse. She believes that, as a nurse, you are with patients and their families on some of the worst days of their lives. With that, she has learned to appreciate all that she has, while also thinking about everyone else’s needs and how to brighten their days in any way possible.
